Oatmeal is the ultimate facial cleanser; it nourishes the skin and is soothing to all types of skin irritations (including dry skin) but particularly good for sensitive skin. Oatmeal makes a gentle abrasive base for face and body scrubs, powdered cleansers and face masks. Use carefully if your skin is extremely irritated as anything that exfoliates will be painful and keep the skin from healing properly. Oatmeal works great to help relieve dry, skin patches (eczema), psoriasis, acne, bug bites, sunburns, and other minor skin irritations. It also helps relieve chicken pox, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, and other itching and scratching rashes. If you have dry skin add a little oil, for more nourishment add a mashed banana or organic plain, unsweetened yogurt. You can add a little salt and oil to make an exfoliating mask or scrub for your body’s dry skin areas.
To begin a cleanse or mask:
Mix in your hand or a small glass bowl one to two tablespoon oatmeal with 1-2 teaspoon (or more) hydrosol, aloe vera juice, yogurt (for extra moisture and exfoliation), milk (for extra nourishment), fresh organic fruit juice (for more of a gentle spa-like fruit acid peel) or water. You may need more liquid to form a smooth spreadable paste-like consistency. Allow the mixture to thicken for one minute. Add more liquid if its’ too thick or more clay, mud or oatmeal if it’s too thin. Apply with a brush or with your fingers, massage onto the face, throat and décolleté with an upward and outward circular motion, avoiding the delicate eye area.
To use as a cleanser:
Rinse off immediately with warm water while scrubbing gently with a wash cloth, then spray your favourite hydrosol or toner over cleansed area, and as a final skin treat - massage your face, throat, décolleté or body with a good oil (jojoba, argan, marula) and then apply your favorite moisturizer.
To use as a mask:
Allow oatmeal to dry completely for 20 to 30 minutes, preferably while you are lying down. Don’t scrub away at your face to remove the mask, instead use a wet cloth to remove the cleanser. Wash off with a wash cloth that you have soaked in warm water, place over your face and allow the mask to absorb the water. Rinse well with warm water, while gently removing with a wash cloth, then spray your favourite hydrosol or toner over cleansed area, and as a final skin treat - massage your face, throat, décolleté or body with a nourishing oil (jojoba, argan, marula, camellia, Rosehip) and then apply your favorite moisturizer.
